What FFMI measures — and what it doesn't

FFMI measures muscle mass relative to height. It is a better measure than BMI for those who train because it isolates fat-free mass and does not penalize muscle volume.

But it is **not a health measure** and not a strength or performance measure. It is a physique measure that provides context about where you are in muscle development — and what is a realistic goal.

FFMI vs BMI
A well-trained man, 80 kg and 175 cm (BMI 26.1 — overweight) with 12% body fat has an FFMI of 22.2. BMI classifies him as overweight. FFMI shows he is in the advanced category. For those who train, FFMI is almost always more informative.
Natural limits in context
Kouri et al. (1995) analyzed natural athletes and found a normalized FFMI ceiling around 25 for men. This is a statistical observation — not a hard biological limit. Genetic outliers can reach 25–26 naturally. But it is rare enough to be a significantly deviating result.
How to improve your FFMI
FFMI increases by building muscle mass (bulk with calorie surplus + strength training) or maintaining muscle mass while body fat percentage decreases (cut or recomp). The right calorie target per phase, high protein intake (1.6–2.2 g/kg), and progressive training are the three factors that drive FFMI upward.

What is a good FFMI?
It depends on gender and training background. For men: beginner (<18), trained (18–19), advanced (20–21), exceptional (22+). For women the values are about 4–5 units lower. FFMI 20–22 for a natural man requires years of consistent training. It's a relative measure — compare your progress with yourself rather than others.
Is FFMI 25 the natural limit?
Kouri et al. (1995) found that natural male athletes rarely exceeded normalized FFMI 25. This is an observation, not a hard biological limit. Individuals with exceptional genetics can reach 25–26 naturally. But a normalized FFMI consistently above 25 is statistically rare among natural athletes and significantly increases the likelihood of substance use.
Is FFMI a better measure than BMI?
For those who strength train: yes. BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. FFMI specifically measures fat-free mass (muscle, organs, bone) relative to height, which is more relevant for assessing muscle development and physique. A well-trained person with high BMI can have low FFMI — and vice versa.
How do you calculate FFMI?
FFMI = (body weight × (1 − body fat/100)) ÷ height². Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in meters). Example: 80 kg, 175 cm, 15% body fat → LBM = 80 × 0.85 = 68 kg → FFMI = 68 ÷ 1.75² = 22.2 → Normalized = 22.2 + 6.1 × (1.8 − 1.75) = 22.5.
Can you have a high FFMI without being strong?
Yes. FFMI measures muscle mass, not strength or performance. A person with a naturally large skeletal structure and high muscle mass without training can have an FFMI of 20 without heavy lifting. And a person with FFMI 19 can be stronger than someone with FFMI 22 depending on neuromuscular efficiency and technique.
